The Boston Foundation

A Greater Boston community foundation, founded in 1915, that partners with donors on grantmaking, research and civic leadership to close regional disparities.

The Boston Foundation is a community foundation based in Greater Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1915 as the Permanent Charity Fund for Boston, it is one of the nation's first community foundations. The Foundation partners with donors to build and sustain a vital, prosperous Greater Boston region, working to close gaps on the region's greatest disparities through grantmaking, research and civic leadership. It manages $2.2 billion in assets under management.

The Foundation's work spans child well-being, economic opportunity, community wealth building, climate action, food insecurity and basic needs, immigrant services, equity and social justice, and education and college access. Its programmes and funds include Success Boston, which supports college and career success for Boston students; the Racial Wealth Gap Partnership; Safety Net Grants; and specialised funds such as the Asian Community Fund, the Latino Equity Fund and the Equality Fund. Recent distributions include nearly $5 million to immigrant-serving organisations and $6.7 million through the Meeting the Moment: Sustaining Families initiative addressing food insecurity.

Research and data transparency run through the Boston Indicators project, which publishes data on Greater Boston conditions and disparities, while civic leadership events are hosted via the Live Channel. Two affiliate organisations operate under the Foundation's umbrella: The Philanthropic Initiative, supporting philanthropic advising, and the Haiti Development Institute, which focuses on development work in Haiti. Staff work in a mission-driven, partnership-oriented environment oriented toward equity and directing resources to marginalised communities.
