Numeral is a sales tax compliance platform that automates nexus detection, state registrations, filings and remittances for ecommerce and SaaS businesses. Founded in 2023 by Sam Ross, previously a product manager at Airbnb, and Matt DuVall, an engineer formerly at Stripe and Notion, the company applies AI and regulatory rules engines to the task of keeping online sellers compliant across more than 11,000 US sales tax jurisdictions, as well as global VAT requirements.

The platform serves over 2,000 customers across ecommerce, SaaS and direct-to-consumer retail, and has processed some $5 billion in transaction volume. Numeral has raised $57 million in funding to date. The company was part of Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch and describes itself as the automation backbone for internet commerce, covering the United States and global VAT markets.

Engineering work spans AI and automation, tax compliance automation, fintech and payments infrastructure, nexus detection algorithms and regulatory rules engines. The company's stated aim is to remove tedious compliance work so that founders and finance teams can concentrate on building products, drawing on problems the founders encountered directly in the aftermath of the Wayfair ruling.
