North American Lighting is a Tier-1 automotive exterior lighting supplier producing LED, adaptive driving beam and laser lamp systems for automakers from 10 North American facilities.
North American Lighting (NAL) designs and manufactures automotive exterior lighting for automakers worldwide and is the largest Tier-1 supplier of its kind in North America. Founded in 1983 as a joint venture involving Koito Manufacturing Co. and two other automotive lighting suppliers, the company began with nine employees and a first order for taillights from Toyota. It now employs nearly 6,000 people across 10 facilities in North America.
The company's engineering and production work spans LED lighting systems, adaptive driving beam (ADB) headlamps and laser lamp technology, alongside development of lighting for autonomous driving. Its stated aim is to improve roadway safety by enhancing driver vision and response time. A Technology Research Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan, carries out research and development, while production follows the Koito Production System (KPS), with an emphasis on continuous improvement (kaizen), controlled costs, minimized inventories and on-time delivery.
Headquartered in Paris, Illinois, NAL operates manufacturing plants in Illinois, Indiana and Alabama, supplying automakers across the automotive OEM and Tier-1 supply sectors. Engineering design and production capabilities are offered to vehicle manufacturers worldwide, covering both current product lines and next-generation lighting technologies in development.
