Mistral

Mistral develops and openly releases open-weight generative AI models, giving developers and enterprises an alternative to proprietary AI systems.

Mistral is an artificial intelligence company that develops and publicly releases open-weight generative AI models. Founded in 2023, it builds large language models intended to rival proprietary systems while keeping them openly available, allowing developers, enterprises and institutions to work with frontier AI while retaining control over their own data and applications. The company positions open model development as an alternative to closed, proprietary AI platforms.

The firm was established by three founders: Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, who previously worked at Google DeepMind and Meta and studied at École Polytechnique in France. Mistral works internationally, with academic roots in France. Its technical work spans generative AI, large language models, open-weight model development, frontier AI research and machine learning, serving the enterprise software and developer tools sectors among others.

Mistral describes its work as mission-driven, aimed at widening access to frontier AI. The company's stated positions include commitments to openness and transparency in model releases, the view that community-backed development is the best way to counter censorship and bias in AI, and an emphasis on customer empowerment through data control and ownership of applications. It maintains a research-oriented culture that values academic excellence.
