Kyutai
Kyutai is a Paris-based non-profit AI research laboratory, founded in 2023, that releases open models for voice AI, multilingual language modelling and simultaneous translation.
Kyutai is a non-profit artificial-intelligence research laboratory based in Paris, founded in November 2023. It describes its mission as building and democratizing artificial general intelligence through open science and frontier research. Kyutai is Europe's first independent research laboratory dedicated to AI open science. The organisation focuses on a select number of high-impact projects in frontier AI research, publishing its findings and releasing models openly.
Its work spans voice and speech AI, natural language and multilingual models, simultaneous translation and visual-speech modelling. Five open models have been released since founding. Moshi is a full-duplex voice AI designed for natural spoken dialogue, with a latency of under 200 milliseconds. Helium-1 is a compact multilingual language model. Hibiki performs voice-to-voice simultaneous translation. MoshiVis is a visual-speech model, and Unmute allows any text-based large language model to listen and speak. Kyutai also maintains public demonstrations of its systems.
The laboratory is funded through substantial founding contributions from Iliad Group, CMA CGM and Schmidt Sciences, provided as non-profit research funding. Work is concentrated in Paris, with a stated European remit. As a non-profit research organisation, Kyutai commits to open-science practice and open-source model releases, with the stated aim of making advanced AI accessible to as many people as possible.
