Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital

Non-profit rehabilitation system providing inpatient and outpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation for brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury and other complex conditions.

Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital is the largest non-profit rehabilitation system in the United States, providing specialised physical medicine and rehabilitation to children and adults recovering from brain injuries, strokes, spinal cord injuries, multiple traumas, amputations, cancer and other complex diagnoses. Founded in 1891 and headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the system operates a 167-bed main hospital alongside numerous locations, and runs more than 100 specialised medical and sports rehabilitation programmes.

The clinical workforce comprises 300 physicians and advanced practice providers, together with roughly two dozen psychologists and other specialty physicians and staff. Services extend across inpatient and outpatient care, paediatric rehabilitation through Mary Free Bed Kids, home health care via Mary Free Bed at Home, and orthotics and prosthetics. The Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Network, established in 2011, brings the system's expertise to more than three dozen acute-care hospitals, while the Mary Free Bed Advisory Group provides national inpatient rehabilitation facility partnerships and consulting.

The organisation has an academic orientation, offering residencies and fellowships in physical medicine and rehabilitation. It is governed by the Mary Free Bed Guild, whose members have donated more than $25 million to organisations enhancing quality of life for people with disabilities, and is supported by the Mary Free Bed Foundation. Its work has been recognised by U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek, CARF and The Joint Commission.

Operations span Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Virginia and West Virginia.
