Select Medical is one of the largest providers of specialised acute and post-acute care in the United States. Founded in 1996 by Rocco A. Ortenzio and Robert A. Ortenzio, the company began as a regional provider of outpatient physical rehabilitation and has since grown into a national network of facilities. It employs more than 45,000 healthcare professionals and serves over 1.2 million patients daily.

Its operations span four lines of business: critical illness recovery hospitals, which treat patients recovering from stroke, brain and spinal cord injuries and other serious conditions; inpatient rehabilitation hospitals; outpatient rehabilitation clinics, the company's original business; and occupational health centres serving employers and workers. Clinical work draws on evidence-based protocols and advanced medical technologies, with particular focus on stroke rehabilitation, brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation, and complex orthopedic rehabilitation.

Select Medical works with health systems across the United States and concentrates on rehabilitation outcomes and the restoration of quality of life. Employees work within a national network of hospitals, clinics and occupational health centres, covering disciplines in post-acute care, acute care, rehabilitation services and occupational health.
