IonQ
IonQ develops and commercialises trapped-ion quantum computers and quantum networking, sensing and security technologies, listing on the NYSE in 2021 and operating offices in 10 countries.
IonQ develops and commercialises trapped-ion quantum computing and related quantum technologies, including quantum networking, sensing and security. Founded in 2015 and headquartered in the United States, the company builds commercial systems around natural, identical atoms - trapped ions - as stable and predictable quantum building blocks. It reported a world-record two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.99%. The firm traces its research foundations to more than 25 years of trapped-ion work at the University of Maryland and Duke University, and was founded by researchers Dr. Christopher Monroe and Dr. Jungsang Kim.
The company's commercial ambitions extend beyond computing. Alongside its trapped-ion quantum computers, IonQ offers quantum networking, quantum sensing and quantum security technologies. It sells into or partners with major cloud and enterprise players, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, AstraZeneca, Hyundai and Airbus. Target application areas span drug discovery, materials science, financial modelling, logistics, cybersecurity and national defence.
IonQ was the first pure-play quantum computing company to go public, listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021 after early venture backing from New Enterprise Associates. It maintains offices in 10 countries. Its published technology roadmap targets 2m qubits by 2030, and the company describes its mission as bringing trapped-ion quantum computing out of the laboratory and into real-world use, with an emphasis on enterprise partnerships and commercial impact.
