Highlands Community Services

A Community Services Board founded in 1972, providing behavioural health care - mental health, substance use treatment and intellectual disability support - in Washington County and Bristol, Virginia.

Highlands Community Services (HCS) is a multi-faceted Community Services Board that provides behavioural health care to residents of Washington County and Bristol, Virginia. Founded in 1972 and operating in southwest Virginia for more than five decades, the agency serves thousands of individuals and families across a range of needs, from mental health services and psychiatric care to substance use disorder treatment and intellectual disability support.

Its clinical work spans crisis intervention, crisis stabilisation, and outpatient behavioural health services. A central facility is Highlands Harbor, a 12-bed crisis stabilisation unit that offers an alternative to hospitalisation for people experiencing psychiatric or substance use crises. Intellectual disability support forms a further pillar of the agency's service mix.

HCS describes itself as a community-focused agency whose mission is improving lives and discovering possibilities, with a stated commitment to quality, innovation and customer service in service delivery. For clinicians and support staff, that translates into work across crisis, outpatient and residential settings in one of Virginia's public-sector behavioural health providers.
