Distalmotion
Distalmotion, a Lausanne-based EPFL spin-off, develops the DEXTER surgical robotic system and Dexter Academy training, aimed at broadening access to minimally invasive robotic surgery.
Distalmotion develops and deploys surgical robotic systems designed to broaden access to minimally invasive robotic surgery. Founded in 2012 as a spin-off from EPFL's Robotics Lab in Lausanne, Switzerland, the company has grown from a four-person startup venture to a team of over 150 professionals and now operates with a global reach. Its technical work spans robotics, surgical robotics and medical devices.
The company's flagship product is the DEXTER Robotic Surgery System, a robotic surgery system designed for simplification over complexity. DEXTER is mobile between operating rooms, integrates into existing workflows and allows surgeons to switch between fully robotic and laparoscopic approaches without dedicated infrastructure. It is used in hospitals and outpatient surgical facilities. The accompanying Dexter Academy provides a training programme supporting clinical excellence for surgeons using the system.
Distalmotion employs more than 150 people representing over 25 nationalities and more than 15 languages. The company describes its culture as Swiss precision combined with international collaboration, with an emphasis on clinical excellence, surgeon training and a mission of widening access to the benefits of robotic surgery.
