The Opportunity:
MemorialCare seeks an authentic, collaborative, strategic, visible, and dynamic executive to serve as the next Chief Administrative Officer (CAO for Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital. (MCWH). This is an exciting opportunity to join a leading tertiary teaching, Magnet- designated medical center with national recognition for a number of clinical service lines. MCWH is one of only eight freestanding children’s hospitals in California. The Chief Administrative Officer provides leadership, direction, planning and oversight of MCWH’s hospital operations and growth. CAO of MCWH establishes the strategic direction for the medical center, guided by and supportive of the MemorialCare strategic plan; develops and implements tactics to achieve the strategic plan, and does so while ensuring the most effective use of clinical, operational, and financial resources; creates a culture of partnership between governance, medical staff leadership, local and health system leadership; and partners with MCMF to execute on integrated delivery systems strategy for the care and management of the patients and communities that MWCH serves.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic:
Market Innovation and Growth
- Creates a strategic vision and plan for women’s and children’s services in the LA and Orange County markets that is supportive of and integrated with the MemorialCare strategic plan.
- Appropriately assesses strategic opportunities to enhance the facility’s market position to better care for our patients and communities.
- Monitor, assess, and enhance operational processes to meet or exceed key hospital objectives and metrics, adhering to and driving exceptional standards in healthcare delivery.
- Uses a data-driven approach to assessing and designing solutions, and resists acting exclusively on anecdotal feedback
Financial Resilience
- Establishes and evolves key operational indicators and operational tactics and systems to achieve best practice performance in clinical, operational and financial indicators.
- Creates and socializes a strategic vision and plan for women’s and children’s services in the LA and Orange County markets that is supportive of and integrated with the MemorialCare strategic plan.
- Organizes and analyzes data in decision making to develop action plans that deploy bed practices to drive overall performance.
- Identify and develop growth strategies with financial rigor to achieve growth goals to better serve our patients and communities.
- Manage budgeting, staff productivity, key contracts and operational accountability across key service lines.
- Understands financial indicators/levers and delivers revenue and cash flow at or above budget, in light of an increasingly challenging health care economic environment (e.g., pursues incremental and significant improvements in productivity and revenue generation).
- Critically and logically evaluates strategic and operational alternatives to select tactics that mitigate cost risk and maximize revenue potential (e.g., prioritizing capital investment based on ROI, physician relationships, safety, etc.).
People and Culture
- Builds a culture of transparency, authenticity and partnership consistent with MemorialCare values
- Be a visible, present leader who engages employees across the organization and promotes a supportive culture built upon trust; focuses on workforce development initiatives.
- Maintains effective employee, medical staff, community and Entity Board relations. Promotes positive community contacts and relationships. Serves as the leadership liaison between medical staff leadership, Board members and MHS and system leaders.
Physicians as Partners
- Creates a culture of partnership and collaboration with medical staff that results in broad physician engagement.
- Helps identify, develop, and support leadership for key clinical programs (for both established and yet to be developed.
- Develop and articulate a physician alignment strategy to successfully engage medical staff and community physicians. Foster a culture of trust and partnership with physicians. Engage with physicians in strategic development. Works with physicians to ensure that clinical workflows are efficient, patient/quality center, and flexible to improve the physician work experience.
- Partners with MCMF leadership to build clinical capacity for care delivery in the Los Angeles and Orange County service areas.
Quality and Value
- Engages the entire organization to prioritize quality, by identifying and applying best practices, and ensuring continuous improvement in performance on Quality, Safety, Patient Experience, and Service Bold Goals.
Governance and Leadership
- Builds a highly collaborative, performance-focused senior leadership team that exemplifies loving, servant leadership
- Establishes MWCH as a leader within the broader healthcare community locally, regionally and at the statewide level
- Develop structures/councils involving physicians and other key stakeholders to develop and implement strategic initiatives.
- Form a robust leadership structure that encourages collaboration and eliminates silos
Operations
- Lead the daily operations of the medical center to ensure top-notch quality, safety, caregiver engagement, provider collaboration and exceptional patient experience
- Establishes a synergistic culture between MCWH and the other MemorialCare hospitals by balancing system level integration and resources with unique local needs and workflows. Provides sound decision making in the execution of the budget to achieve the target net income and cash flow.
- Partner with system Clinical institute leaders to define, develop and maintain MCWH clinical institutes to build true Centers of Excellence.
- Work in close partnership with philanthropy to integrate philanthropic development into the overall strategy, and to drive best in class philanthropic results. Enthusiastically participates in and helps lead donor-facing activities. Directs management to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements
- Actively participates in advocacy efforts through sanctioned vehicles
- Exercises necessary, appropriate authority and accountability for the operations and long-range planning for MWCH and other associated health services business entities
- Displays strong business acumen, sophisticated knowledge of health care funding, and experience in competitive marketplaces with the ability to make complex, nuanced, definitive decisions
IDEAL EXPERIENCE
- MBA or comparable graduate degree
- MD experience preferred
- Five–10 years of progressive experience as a health care executive, CEO experience preferred
- Working knowledge and familiarity with tertiary care and academic programs
- Understands and supports unique dynamics of obstetrics and pediatrics. Builds trust with OB and pediatric providers
- Experience building new hospitals or leading large projects is a plus
- Proven success in high reliability organizations (HRO) and safety culture
- Experience or understanding of hospital obstetrics and women's health services required
- Minimum requirement to have collaborated with physicians and governance at an executive level with positive results
