Unity Technologies

Unity Technologies, founded in Copenhagen in 2004, makes a real-time 3D game engine and development tools used across mobile, PC and VR gaming and in automotive, healthcare, retail and government applications.

Unity Technologies builds a real-time 3D development platform, comprising a game engine and associated tools, designed to make game development and interactive 3D creation accessible beyond large studios. Founded in 2004 in Copenhagen by three Danish entrepreneurs - David Helgason, Nicholas Francis and Joachim Ante - the company was originally named Over the Edge Entertainment; the engine itself was released in 2005. It operates from more than 45 locations worldwide.

The platform supports cross-platform development across multiple operating systems, with particular strength in mobile and PC gaming and virtual reality. It powers more than 70% of the top 1000 mobile games and more than 70% of the top-selling VR games on the Meta Store, and at least 28% of the top 1000 PC games on Steam. Games built on the engine average 3 billion downloads a month. Titles made with it include Hollow Knight: Silksong and Cult of the Lamb.

Beyond games, the technology is applied to automotive dashboard design, healthcare training simulations, immersive retail experiences and government visualisation of infrastructure projects. The company reports more than 1.3 million monthly active users. Its stated mission is to make game development accessible to everyone, not only to studios with large budgets; the name Unity reflects a belief that the development community achieves more by collaborating than by competing.
