The Mutual Group

The Mutual Group is a member-based insurance services platform founded in 2023 to provide permanent capital, enterprise technology and operational expertise to independent mutual insurance companies. Through a partner-member model, mutual carriers retain full ownership, board control and brand identity while gaining access to capabilities they might not build alone. The company operates across the United States and employs more than 400 people.

Its work spans several technical and operational domains: enterprise technology, underwriting technology, claims technology, corporate services operations and insurance platform services. Products include a Member-Based Insurance Services Platform, alongside underwriting, claims, technology and corporate services delivered to partner-member carriers. The platform serves 50,000 commercial policyholders and services over $800 million in premium.

The company was founded by former NAMIC chief executive Chuck Chamness in partnership with Bain Capital Insurance and GuideOne Insurance. Its stated purpose is to help mutual insurers grow without surrendering their independence and identity, with an emphasis on permanence and long-term legacy rather than merger-driven consolidation, and on developing the next generation of mutual leadership. It works with the insurance, mutual insurance and commercial insurance sectors.
