Riverbay Corporation manages Co-op City, a New York State Mitchell-Lama housing cooperative in the northeast Bronx (zip code 10475) and the largest single residential development in the United States. The development comprises 15,372 residential units in 35 high-rise buildings and seven townhouse clusters of garden and duplex apartments, housing approximately 50,000 residents. Of the site's 320 acres, 20 percent has been built on, leaving the remainder as green space.
The corporation runs much of the community's infrastructure itself. An on-site tri-generation power plant supplies the development's electricity, heat, hot water and air conditioning. Riverbay also operates in-house sanitation and waste collection, a Public Safety department and security operations, and publishes Co-op City Times, the community newspaper, now in its 53rd year. Technical work at the company therefore spans plant operations, utility services, public safety and publishing.
Co-op City is governed by an elected 15-member resident Board of Directors, which sets community policy under a cooperative model in which residents are shareholders. Amenities maintained within the development include shopping centres, community centres with meeting rooms, parking garages, playgrounds, professional offices, dining options, senior services, a public library, a fire house and an education park covering nursery through high school levels.
The company's industry footprint spans housing cooperatives, residential property management, Mitchell-Lama affordable housing, energy generation, retail and dining, senior services and education. Further information is available at coopcity.com.
