The company operates under what it calls The Marmon Method: individual businesses retain local autonomy while drawing on centralised support, financial strength and strategic resources from the parent. Marmon describes itself as "the biggest small business you'll ever find", reflecting a structure in which operating companies keep their own entrepreneurial character within a larger group. The business was founded in the 1950s by brothers Jay Pritzker and Robert Pritzker. Angelo Pantaleo is chairman and chief executive; he joined the company in 1991 and assumed his current role in December 2018.
The Marmon name pays homage to the Marmon Motor Car Company (1902-1933), maker of the Marmon Wasp, the car that won the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911. The group operates globally and emphasises innovation and entrepreneurship across its portfolio.
