A Bath, Maine shipyard that designs, builds and supports U.S. Navy surface combatants, including Arleigh Burke-class and Zumwalt-class destroyers.
Bath Iron Works is a shipyard based in Bath, Maine, on the Kennebec River, and part of General Dynamics Marine Systems. Founded in 1884, it has built surface combatants for the U.S. Navy for more than 140 years. The yard designs, constructs and supports complex naval vessels, with work spanning naval ship design, ship construction, systems installation, surface combatant engineering, stealth ship design and sea trials.
Its principal programmes are the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers and the Zumwalt-class stealth destroyers, both built for the U.S. Navy. Production draws on a range of shipbuilding trades, including welding and systems installation, alongside design engineering roles.
Employees work across office, shop floor and onboard environments, including during sea trials. The company offers training programmes that develop skills in trades ranging from carpentry to design engineering, and describes a focus on career development alongside shipbuilding. Bath Iron Works is a major regional employer supporting Maine's economy.
