Focused
Focused Energy develops laser-driven inertial fusion energy for commercial clean power, working on Pearl fuel capsules and the LightHouse fusion architecture in the US and Germany.
Focused Energy is a laser-driven fusion company developing commercial-scale clean power based on inertial fusion energy technology. The firm builds on the scientific foundation of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and on technologies proven there; members of its team were involved in achieving fusion ignition at the NIF in 2021 and net energy gain in 2022.
Two named programmes anchor its engineering work. Pearl™ fuel capsules are precision-engineered fusion fuel capsules designed to optimise fuel use and, according to the company, increase energy output by 30x compared with current NIF approaches. LightHouse™ is its fusion architecture for laser-based inertial fusion energy. An integrated engineering prototype is under development to validate the commercial viability of that approach.
Technical domains at the company include laser-driven fusion, inertial fusion energy, laser systems engineering, fusion fuel capsule engineering, precision engineering, plasma physics and fusion ignition. Focused Energy has received funding from German innovation agencies and collaborates with government programmes, among them the US Department of Energy's Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program.
The company operates from the San Francisco Bay Area and Darmstadt, Germany, and describes its mission as delivering safe, climate-neutral and virtually inexhaustible energy.
