The Jed Foundation (JED) seeks a skilled and experienced Content Manager to join our team. Reporting to the Senior Editorial Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing, creating, and editing content that supports JED’s mission and programs, which includes teens and young adults seeking mental health information and supports, school professionals participating in JED Academic Programs, other caring adults like caregivers, and a wide range of partners and other supporters working alongside us to protect the emotional well-being and prevent suicide for teens and young adults. The ideal candidate will have excellent writing and editing capabilities and be a stellar project manager.
Key Responsibilities
Content Creation, Optimization, and Updating - Serve as a core member of the editorial team, working with the Senior Editorial Director and other teammates to ensure that all of JED’s content meets high standards for accuracy, readability, clarity, and accessibility, and reflects best practices and brand guidelines.
- Manage implementation of content strategy for youth and caring adults, including developing briefs for writers, issuing assignments to freelance writers, editing submissions, working with the writers on revisions, and preparing content for publication.
- Manage content creation across content types and channels (directly or via freelance content creators), including audio, video, UX copy, long-form articles, blog posts, social media, and more.
- Manage regular updates to existing content to boost SEO, reflect current best practices, and improve related links and other elements.
- Ensure our digital properties, including the website and microsites, are updated and inclusive of the latest and/or most relevant content, and that pathways to content and links between content are up-to-date.
- Review traffic and engagement analytics and enact recommended actions.
- Ensure JED’s content reflects up-to-date SEO best practices.
- Shepherd content through the review process, including consultation with subject-matter experts, and continually work with teammates to refine the review process.
- Write blog posts about organizational initiatives and accomplishments, video descriptions, landing page copy, and occasional articles.
- Create cross-channel content that highlights JED’s impact.
Copy Editing- Review content created by colleagues throughout the organization, including emails, landing pages, social media posts, newsletters, press releases, and web copy, to ensure it accurately reflects JED’s brand, employs safe messaging, is free of typos and grammatical problems, meets accessibility standards, and reads well.
- Maintain JED’s editorial style guide, ensuring it is consistently refreshed to reflect shifting needs and new situations.
Content Management and Production- Participate in content production, including building content in a CMS, fixing and updating existing content, and collaborating with the Digital Product team or other partners on content creation needs.
- Source images for new content. Curate resources and related content and link to accompany new content.
- Assist with QA and other tasks relating to digital project development.
- With the senior editorial director, maintain the content calendar for new and updated content.
Admin and Miscellaneous Tasks- Manage contracts and contract renewals for contractors and freelancers.
- Manage invoices from contractors and freelancers.
- Manage the content-request queue.
- Track and manage intellectual property for JED content, including permissions, renewals, and usage rights.
- Analyze and optimize team processes and tools, with the goal of improving the ways we collaborate across teams, including development of templates, forms, and other resources to improve the quality of content and the efficiency of the content-creation process.
- Utilize available AI tools to improve efficiency and productivity, and with the Senior Editorial Director and other teammates, develop and iterate on guidelines for ethical AI use in editorial for the organization.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- 3+ years of experience in content development and management.
- Strong editing and writing skills, with strong attention to detail and the ability to write in various styles for different audiences and channels, as well as detail-oriented proofreading and copy-editing skills.
- Strong project and process management skills.
- Experience or background in youth mental health is a plus.
- Familiarity with mental health messaging best practices and trauma-informed communication is a plus.
- Clear, vivid writing skills across audiences, formats, and channels.
- Deep knowledge of digital content best practices, including SEO.
- Basic proficiency with Canva and/or other design/presentation applications.
- Experience with Wordpress, Contentful, and/or other CMSs.
- Understanding of channel and format best practices for websites, email, and social.
- Ability to juggle multiple projects and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Psychology, or a related field is a plus.
- Thorough command of Office Suite, Google tools, and comfort with project management software such as Asana.
- Commitment to the vision of the organization and the high quality of the content at all levels.
Key Distinctions- This role focuses on content creation, editing, optimization, and governance to support JED’s digital platforms, campaigns, and audience engagement, rather than overseeing programmatic strategy or external media partnerships.
- The Content Manager plays a critical role in maintaining the quality, consistency, and clarity of JED’s educational and marketing content across channels, with a particular emphasis on digital content for youth and adult audiences.
- This position collaborates closely with program, design, and development teams to ensure content is aligned with JED’s voice, values, and goals, but does not lead brand strategy, media relations, or external partner communications.
- This role is embedded within a cross-functional editorial team, serving as both a project manager and quality gatekeeper for content development workflows.
Success Metrics
Key performance indicators for this role will be developed in collaboration with the Senior Editorial Director and may include:
- Timely and high-quality production of new and updated content aligned with editorial goals and campaign timelines.
- Improvements in SEO performance and user engagement across JED’s digital content (e.g., bounce rate, time on page, click-throughs).
- Increased visibility and utility of JED’s Mental Health Resource Center and related content hubs.
- Efficient execution of editorial workflows, including project tracking, review cycles, and content governance processes.
- High satisfaction from internal stakeholders and partners related to content support and collaboration.
- Accuracy and consistency of messaging across published materials, aligned with brand and safe messaging guidelines.
- Growth in the use of editorial tools and templates that streamline content creation and improve quality.
- Increased adoption of ethical and efficient AI tools in content production processes.
Location/Travel Information:Please note that this position is largely remote and based out of the NYC Tri-State Area Only. The role may require retreat/business meetings at JED’s central office in NYC or other locations as designated by JED leadership. Additional travel may be required.
Physical RequirementsThis role necessitates prolonged periods of computer use, which may involve sitting or standing daily. Additionally, it requires occasional lifting and the setup of company booths at conferences and similar events.
Pay RangesThe range listed on this job posting is based on JED's compensation posting ranges. Salaries may be higher or lower depending on experience and geographic location. Additionally, you will be eligible to participate in our company’s equity program and our robust medical, dental, vision, retirement, mental health, and other benefits offered to permanent benefit-eligible employees.
