Wadhwani AI is an independent nonprofit institute that develops and deploys artificial intelligence solutions for social impact. Founded in 2018 and based in India, it works with government agencies and frontline workers to reach underserved populations, with an explicit focus on the bottom 95% of the population. The institute reports 25 AI solutions deployed, nine government engagements and roughly 20 million lives touched in India.
Its work spans healthcare, agriculture, education and public services. Cough Against TB, an AI-based tuberculosis screening tool, has been used on more than 122,000 patients; Shishu Maapan applies AI to newborn health assessment across five states; and the Oral Reading Fluency tools have completed 15 million reading assessments. A digital advisory and grievance-resolution system has handled 3 million grievances, while a real-time chatbot for farmers has exchanged nearly 500,000 messages aimed at improving agricultural yields.
Technical work covers machine learning, natural language processing and chatbots, speech and language assessment, disease-screening AI and digital advisory systems. The team exceeds 200 people, including AI researchers, data scientists, engineers and domain experts, working in a multidisciplinary structure alongside government partners. The institute reached its ten-millionth life impacted within six years of founding.
Wadhwani AI is grant-funded and supported by philanthropic organisations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Google.org, USAID and UNICEF. It was inaugurated by India's Prime Minister.
