Village Green

Village Green develops, builds and manages apartment communities and mixed-use retail spaces, with about 50,000 apartment homes across some 50 US cities, dating back to 1919.

Village Green develops, builds, and manages apartment communities and integrated mixed-use retail spaces, and is one of the nation's largest privately held apartment companies. The firm manages approximately 50,000 apartment homes across some 50 cities in the United States, including Detroit, Michigan, where it is based and where it has redeveloped two high-rise apartment communities.

The company traces its origins to 1919, when it began building single family homes. It expanded into apartments, condominiums and commercial buildings through the 1950s, and in 1966 established a separate division dedicated exclusively to developing, building and managing apartment communities. In the 1970s and 1980s it pushed innovations in solar homes and energy efficiency, work that established a long-standing position in sustainable living. Mixed-use retail components, including restaurants, coffee shops and markets, are attached to many of its apartment communities.

Village Green is privately held and has operated for more than a century. Its stated founding principle is housing accessibility and inclusivity; in the 1930s and 1940s its founder pressed banks in Detroit to offer mortgages to underprivileged and ethnically diverse people. The company received the City of Detroit's Spirit of Detroit Award for its contribution to the city's economic revitalisation. Its work spans real estate, residential housing, commercial buildings, mixed-use retail and property management.
