University Health Network (UHN) is a Toronto-based hospital network and research institution, affiliated with the University of Toronto as a major teaching hospital. It is described as Canada's number one hospital and the world's number one publicly funded hospital, with a workforce of more than 20,000 people, branded as TeamUHN, working across 10 sites in Ontario.
The network comprises six institutions: Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital, which provide acute and specialised care; Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, focused on cancer care and oncology research; Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, covering rehabilitation medicine and research; The Michener Institute of Education at UHN, a health sciences education institute; and West Park Healthcare Centre, which provides continuing care and rehabilitation services. In a recent fiscal year the network recorded more than 39,000 acute inpatient stays and close to 121,000 emergency department visits.
UHN operates the largest hospital-based research programme in Canada. Its clinical and technical work spans cardiology, transplantation, neurosciences, oncology, surgical innovation, infectious diseases, genomic medicine, rehabilitation medicine and healthcare innovation. The network's culture is shaped by its academic affiliation, a stated emphasis on compassionate, patient-centred care, and a team identity organised around excellence in care, discovery and learning.
Roles at UHN sit across clinical practice, medical research, health sciences education and hospital operations. The network draws referrals and a global reputation beyond Ontario and Canada, and has grown through the integration of established institutions.
