Throne Labs
Throne Labs operates a network of solar-powered, sensor-equipped smart public restrooms in US cities, using real-time data to manage cleaning and maintenance.
Throne Labs, founded in 2020 and headquartered in Brentwood, Maryland, designs and operates a distributed network of smart public restrooms known as Thrones. Each unit is self-contained, solar-powered and fully off-grid, and can be deployed in a few hours without traditional utility hookups. The restrooms are touchless, ADA-compliant and equipped with more than 21 sensors that report in real time on cleanliness, usage and maintenance needs. The company uses this data to dispatch cleaning crews only when necessary, and reports an average cleanliness rating of 4.3 out of 5, user approval above 90% and issue resolution within 24 hours in 94% of cases.
Entry is managed through QR codes, the Throne mobile app, SMS text messaging or NFC tap cards. The app-based system creates accountability for users while preserving privacy. Throne Labs works with municipal governments, public transit agencies and workforce operators, with contracts in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., New York City, Ann Arbor and the San Francisco Bay Area.
The company's technical work spans IoT sensors, real-time data analytics, off-grid energy systems, computer vision for cleanliness monitoring and predictive maintenance dispatch. Its stated mission is to expand access to public restrooms and provide peace of mind to the millions of people who venture out each day, with an emphasis on accessibility, sustainability and dignity in public infrastructure.
