Thorn

Thorn is a nonprofit that builds AI-driven detection, moderation and education tools to defend children from online sexual abuse and exploitation.

Thorn is a nonprofit organisation that builds technology to defend children from grooming, sextortion and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in the digital age. Founded in 2012 by Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore and registered as a 501(c)(3), it works across technology platforms, law enforcement agencies, parents and young people, and collaborates with tech companies, NGOs and governments worldwide.

Its technical work spans predictive AI and machine learning, CSAM detection and classification, content moderation and digital safety technology. The flagship product, CSAM Classifier, applies predictive AI to detect new and previously unreported child sexual abuse material. Safer is a platform that helps technology companies detect and respond to child sexual abuse on their own services, while investigative tools are supplied to law enforcement.

Beyond detection, Thorn runs prevention and education programmes. NoFiltr delivers prevention messaging to young people and reaches millions of them; Thorn for Parents is a resource hub for families navigating digital safety conversations. The organisation reports over 1.4 trillion files processed to detect CSAM, more than 13 million files of suspected sexual abuse material flagged for removal, and support for more than 1,000 law enforcement agencies.

Work at Thorn sits at the intersection of machine learning, content moderation and child protection, in a mission-driven, cross-sector setting that spans the technology, law enforcement and nonprofit fields.
