The Maritime Aquarium

AZA-accredited aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut, running living exhibits, Long Island Sound research and marine education programmes for 50,000+ students a year.

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is an AZA-accredited aquarium and marine conservation and education institution located on the historic South Norwalk waterfront in Connecticut, roughly 50 miles from New York City. Founded in 1988 as The Maritime Center, it operates living exhibits, research and education programmes focused on Long Island Sound and global ocean ecosystems.

The aquarium's collection comprises more than 8,000 animals representing 285 species across over 75 immersive exhibits, and it hosts approximately 450,000 guests a year. Its research and fieldwork are supported by the R/V Spirit of the Sound, a research vessel used for citizen science programmes and on-the-water experiences; data gathered contributes to a 30-year biodiversity database tracking the health of Long Island Sound.

Work at the institution spans marine biology research, biodiversity monitoring, citizen science and environmental education. Education programmes - including on-site classes, school outreach and on-the-water sessions - reach more than 50,000 students and children annually. The aquarium describes its focus as marine conservation and environmental protection, community engagement, and cultivating future ocean stewards.
