Tenderloin Housing Clinic
San Francisco non-profit founded in 1980 providing affordable housing, tenant advocacy, legal aid, re-entry housing and community services to low-income residents.
Tenderloin Housing Clinic (THC) is a San Francisco non-profit working in affordable housing, tenant advocacy and legal aid. Founded on February 1st 1980 by students from Hastings Law School, it began in a 70-square-foot office at GLIDE with the aim of helping low-income tenants understand and assert their legal rights. Four decades on, the organisation serves more than 3,000 clients a year and operates multiple properties across San Francisco, with its roots in the Tenderloin neighbourhood.
Its work falls into five areas: permanent housing and the preservation of affordable housing stock for low-income residents; transitional and re-entry housing for criminal justice-involved adults; money management programmes for clients; legal assistance designed to prevent displacement; and community support services for vulnerable populations. The organisation continues to advocate for tenant-protecting policies and for expanded housing opportunities.
Employment at THC is with a mission-driven non-profit whose stated commitments include preventing displacement, preserving affordable housing and providing second chances to adults with criminal justice involvement. Roles span housing services, re-entry support, money management, legal aid and community services across its San Francisco properties.
