SWCA Environmental Consultants is a 100% employee-owned environmental consulting firm founded in 1981 by Dr. Steven W. Carothers. The firm helps public and private clients navigate environmental challenges by combining scientific expertise, regulatory knowledge, and practical problem-solving. Its stated purpose is to preserve natural and cultural resources for tomorrow while enabling projects that benefit people today, under a guiding philosophy it describes as "Sound Science and Creative Solutions".

Work spans a broad set of technical disciplines, carried out by multidisciplinary teams: biological and ecological consulting; cultural and paleontological resources; air quality and noise analysis; water resources; environmental planning and permitting; engineering; GIS and geospatial data; ecosystem restoration; resilience planning; and regulatory advisory services. Day-to-day project work includes fieldwork, environmental review, agency coordination, technical reporting, permitting, compliance, and project management. Employees have a direct stake in the firm, sharing responsibility for work quality, client relationships, and long-term success.
