Phagenesis
Phagenesis develops the Phagenyx System, a neurostimulation device using pharyngeal electrical stimulation to treat swallowing disorders after stroke and other neurological conditions.
Phagenesis is a medical technology company developing neurostimulation therapies for neurogenic dysphagia, the swallowing disorder that follows stroke and other neurological injury. Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Manchester, United Kingdom, with regulatory and clinical presence in the United States, it concentrates on the neurological root cause of dysphagia rather than its symptomatic management.
Its product, the Phagenyx System, delivers pharyngeal electrical stimulation (PES) to the oropharynx to restore swallowing control. The therapy is intended to promote neuroplasticity and hasten the brain's capacity to coordinate safe swallowing. Reported outcomes include a two-fold improvement in swallowing safety, and the approach is supported by more than 30 clinical publications. The work spans neurostimulation, pharyngeal electrical stimulation, neuroplasticity, medical device development and dysphagia rehabilitation, with applications in stroke care, neurology, acute care and hospital length-of-stay reduction.
The company holds an FDA Breakthrough Device Designation and its therapy is included in the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association 2026 Stroke Guidelines. Phagenesis raised $42M in a Series D round in 2024, with backing from investors including EQT Life Sciences, Sectoral Asset Management, British Patient Capital, Northern Gritstone and Aphelion.
