Patient First
Patient First runs physician-led medical centers offering walk-in urgent care, primary care, telehealth and occupational health across the mid-Atlantic U.S.
Patient First is a physician-led operator of medical centers in the United States, providing urgent care, primary care, telehealth and occupational health services. The company was founded in 1981 in Richmond, Virginia, by emergency physician Richard P. "Pete" Sowers III, and operates a walk-in model with no appointments, designed to offer an alternative to hospital emergency rooms for non-life-threatening conditions.
The network comprises 79 medical centers across Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., in the mid-Atlantic region. Centers are open 365 days a year, from 8am to 8pm, and combine on-site x-ray imaging, laboratory testing and pharmacy services so that diagnosis and treatment can be completed in a single visit. The company accepts most major insurance plans and emphasizes convenience and cost-effectiveness in its operating model.
In addition to urgent care, Patient First delivers ongoing primary care, remote medical services through telehealth, and occupational health services for employers and workers. The organization is accredited by the National Urgent Care Center Accreditation, and its centers received 38 Best Urgent Care awards in 2025.
