OpenRouter
OpenRouter provides a unified API giving developers access to 300+ AI models from 60+ providers, with model routing, fallbacks and consolidated billing.
OpenRouter, founded in 2023, operates a unified interface and AI gateway that gives developers single-API access to more than 300 large language models from over 60 providers. The service is designed to remove vendor lock-in while offering transparent pricing without subscriptions. The company reports more than 5m global users and over 100 trillion tokens processed annually, and describes itself as the largest and most popular AI gateway for developers worldwide.
The core product, the OpenRouter Unified API, standardises access across models and providers. Around it sit several supporting services: an intelligent routing layer that directs requests across models and providers with automatic fallbacks to improve uptime; consolidated billing across all providers; public model rankings that publish real-world usage insights; response healing, which repairs malformed JSON output from models; configurable data-handling policies for developers and enterprises; and zero completion insurance, which protects customers against charges for incomplete outputs.
The company raised $40m in a Series A round from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and Sequoia Capital. Its work spans large language models, AI model routing, API infrastructure, multi-provider AI infrastructure, failover and fallback systems and developer tooling, serving the AI and developer-tooling, software-development and enterprise-AI sectors. OpenRouter has a global footprint and describes its approach as developer-first and oriented toward open, multi-model, multi-provider AI infrastructure.
