Mercado Libre
Mercado Libre runs Latin America's leading e-commerce and fintech ecosystem, operating a marketplace, Mercado Pago payments and credit, and a logistics network across 18 countries.
Mercado Libre operates the leading e-commerce and fintech ecosystem in Latin America. Founded in 1999 in Buenos Aires by Marcos Galperin while he was studying at Stanford Graduate School of Business, the Argentine-origin company now employs more than 123,000 people and operates in 18 countries across the region. It serves over 126 million unique buyers and records 83 million monthly active users.
The business runs on three interlocking components. Mercado Libre is the commerce platform and online consumer-to-consumer marketplace, originally built for pre-owned goods and inspired by eBay. Mercado Pago, its fintech division, provides payment processing, digital accounts, credit services and insurance. An in-house logistics network covers shipping and delivery, with 2.7 billion items delivered in the last twelve months. Engineering and product work spans e-commerce platform technology, fintech and digital payments, logistics and fulfilment technology, digital credit and insurance, and marketplace technology for both C2C and B2C.
The company's stated mission is to democratize commerce and financial services across the region. Over more than 25 years it has grown from an eBay-inspired startup into a comprehensive commerce and fintech ecosystem, and it is now among the most valuable companies in Latin America.
