The company serves foodservice and retail supermarket outlets across the United States, with a presence in 43 states and more than 4,200 employees. It listed on NASDAQ in 1985.

The business began in 1971, when founder Gerald B. Shreiber bought an ailing pretzel company at a court auction for $72,100, taking on eight employees. Growth since has come largely through strategic acquisitions, among them ICEE-USA, The Funnel Cake Factory, Country Home Bakers, Hom/Ade Foods and Dippin' Dots, the frozen novelty ice cream brand acquired in 2022. Dan Fachner was appointed chief executive in 2021, succeeding Shreiber.

Its portfolio spans several categories of snack foods and frozen treats. Brands include SUPERPRETZEL soft pretzels, ICEE frozen beverages, Dippin' Dots ice cream, LUIGI'S Real Italian Ice, The Funnel Cake Factory funnel cakes and Hola Churros. Operations cover food manufacturing, frozen beverage and frozen novelty production, baked goods production, and distribution to foodservice customers and retail supermarkets, as well as brand marketing. End markets include amusement parks and restaurants alongside general retail.

The company describes its brand mission as "Fun Served Here" and characterises itself as a leader and innovator in the snack food industry.
