ITHAKA is a nonprofit that expands access to knowledge and education through digital library, preservation and learning platforms, including JSTOR, Portico and Ithaka S+R.
ITHAKA is a mission-based nonprofit that works to expand access to knowledge and education worldwide. Its stated aim is to make higher education and scholarly information more affordable and more effective, to improve outcomes for students and researchers, and to preserve digital knowledge for future generations. The organisation serves students, teachers and researchers in 180 countries and operates across higher education, scholarly publishing, academic libraries, museums and cultural institutions, education in prisons and policy.
Its work is carried out through three principal services. JSTOR is a research and teaching platform providing access to collections held by academic libraries, publishers and museums, together with tools for collections stewardship. Portico preserves scholarly and cultural digital materials for the long term. Ithaka S+R conducts research and provides strategic guidance for colleges, universities, libraries, publishers, cultural institutions and policymakers.
Technical work spans digital libraries, digital preservation, learning platforms, collections stewardship, research and strategic analysis, and education technology. ITHAKA also invests in emerging education services, supports higher education in prisons, advances credit mobility and develops new approaches to research and teaching, with an emphasis on affordability, effectiveness and long-term digital preservation.
