International Institute for Sustainable Development

Independent think tank founded in 1990, with 300+ experts producing research and tools on climate resilience, natural resources, freshwater ecosystems and sustainable development policy.

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an independent think tank founded in 1990. It produces research, knowledge and tools intended to accelerate solutions for a stable climate, sustainable resources and fair economies, working with governments, businesses and civil society to design and test practical sustainability measures. The organisation employs more than 300 experts and has worked in over 70 countries.

IISD's technical work spans climate resilience, sustainable natural resources management, sustainable development policy, whole-ecosystem freshwater research and the tracking of international environmental negotiations. Its approach combines research with on-the-ground implementation, capacity-building and policy reform, with an emphasis on measurable outcomes for people and the planet and an integrated, cross-disciplinary treatment of interconnected challenges.

Two flagship undertakings illustrate its range. The Experimental Lakes Area is a whole-ecosystem freshwater research facility, while the Earth Negotiations Bulletin provides real-time reporting on international climate negotiations. IISD is headquartered in Winnipeg, Canada, with a further office in Geneva, Switzerland, and operations across more than 70 countries.
