Infinitesima

Infinitesima, a University of Bristol spin-out, develops atomic-force-microscopy-based 3D metrology tools for in-line semiconductor process control.

Infinitesima develops atomic precision 3D metrology technology for semiconductor manufacturing process control. The company was founded in 2001 as a spin-out from the University of Bristol and is led by its technical founder, CTO Professor Andrew Humphris. It is backed by Applied Ventures, the venture arm of Applied Materials.

Its core platform, the Rapid Probe Microscope (RPM), combines atomic force microscopy with high-speed laser activation and interferometric measurement. According to the company, this approach delivers picometer-level precision at speeds 100 times faster than conventional probe techniques, making in-line 3D process control practical for complex semiconductor structures. Products based on the platform include Metron3D and the RPM Scanner.

The company's technical work spans atomic force microscopy, interferometric measurement, nanoscale measurement and probe microscopy. Its technology has been qualified by leading semiconductor companies worldwide and is deployed with manufacturers across the global semiconductor supply chain. The company is headquartered in the United Kingdom.
