HDR is a 100% employee-owned professional services firm working in architecture, engineering, environmental services and construction. Founded in 1917 by H.H. Henningson as Henningson Engineering Company in Omaha, Nebraska, and formerly known as Henningson, Durham, and Richardson, the firm now employs more than 14,000 people across over 200 locations worldwide. It is ranked No. 6 among the world's design firms and is the largest healthcare design firm in the industry.

Work spans architecture and engineering design for buildings and infrastructure, environmental consulting, construction-related services, and specialist capability in water treatment and power systems. Markets served include healthcare, transportation, water, power, science and technology, defence, commercial real estate and infrastructure. The firm traces its origins to bringing power and water treatment systems to rural Midwest towns, and continues to work in the water and power markets.

Broad-based employee ownership was instituted in 1996, and more than 90% of employees worldwide own HDR stock or equity. The firm describes a culture of collaboration and shared commitment to client success, and has grown organically over more than a century of operation.
