Dekra SE is an independent, non-listed expert organisation in testing, inspection and certification (TIC), and describes itself as the world's largest of its kind. Founded in Berlin on June 30, 1925 as the Deutsche Kraftfahrzeug-Überwachungs-Verein, the company began with vehicle inspections and marked its centenary in 2025. It employs nearly 49,000 people in more than 60 countries across six continents, and works on safety, security and sustainability issues "on the road, at work, and at home".

The company's services span automotive safety and vehicle inspection, product testing and certification, industrial inspection, cybersecurity, medical device testing, renewable energy - including hydrogen technologies - and organisational safety consulting. Its technical work covers emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, automated and autonomous driving, and digital transformation, alongside its established inspection business.

Dekra's stated purpose, tracing back to a 1925 initiative by industrialist Hugo Stinnes to improve road safety, is focused on safety when dealing with technology and the environment. The organisation remains privately held and operates a global workforce of specialists across the automotive, industrial, energy, medical device and cybersecurity sectors.
