Cash Access UK is a not-for-profit company established in December 2022 and funded by major high street banks - AIB NI, Bank of Ireland UK, Barclays, Danske Bank, HSBC UK, Lloyds Banking Group, NatWest Group, Santander, TSB and Virgin Money. Based in London and overseen by an independent board, it provides shared cash and banking services to communities across the United Kingdom. Its stated purpose is to maintain access to essential financial services for individuals and small businesses as banking provision changes.
The company's main service is a network of shared banking hubs on high streets. These hubs offer counter services operated by the Post Office, allowing customers of all major banks and building societies to carry out regular cash transactions Monday through Friday. Within the hubs, a community banker service lets customers speak to representatives of their own bank about more complex matters, with bankers from different institutions rotating on different days of the week. Cash Access UK also runs managed deposit services for individuals and businesses, and works with suppliers to test new services aimed at wider community needs.
The scale of the operation is considerable: more than 250 banking hubs and over 140 deposit services are operated nationwide, supporting close to one million customers a month. The work is carried out in collaboration with LINK, the UK's cash machine network, to assess where communities need support - a relevant question given that between 5m and 6m UK adults rely on cash day to day. Cash Access UK is regulated by multiple regulatory bodies and operates within the banking, retail banking and cash access sectors.
