Boostdraft
Boostdraft builds a Microsoft Word add-in that turns Word into an IDE for legal documents, automating drafting tasks such as definition lookup and formatting with tools for document comparison and reference checking.
Boostdraft builds software that turns Microsoft Word into an integrated development environment for legal documents - described by the company as "VS Code, but for contracts." Its add-in automates routine drafting work such as scrolling, hunting for definitions and repairing formatting errors, and provides AI-assisted tools for document comparison, reference checking and smart formatting designed to fit existing legal workflows. The product has more than 10,000 paying users, drawn from law firms, legal services providers and enterprises.
The engineering organisation is the bulk of the company: roughly 70% of the team are engineers, many recruited from Microsoft, IBM and NTT R&D. The technical stack spans C#, Rust and Python, with work in Microsoft Word add-in development, natural language document processing and modern machine-learning frameworks. Software engineers work alongside legal professionals, and the product philosophy is pragmatic: automate the tedious parts of drafting and leave the lawyer's methods intact, rather than applying AI for its own sake.
Founded by graduates of MIT and Stanford, Boostdraft grew out of a small research project into a product serving major law firms. It operated for its first four years without external funding and acquired customers entirely through word of mouth rather than paid marketing.
