Banner Health

Banner Health is a nonprofit health system running 33 hospitals, 400+ outpatient sites, health plans, clinical research and medical education across six states, with nearly 60,000 staff.

Banner Health is one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the United States, founded in 1999 and headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. It employs nearly 60,000 people and operates 33 hospitals and more than 400 outpatient sites across six states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada and Wyoming. The organisation is Arizona's largest private employer.

Its work spans hospitals and outpatient care, health insurance, academic medicine and clinical research, run under a single integrated model. Its academic arm, Banner – University Medicine, operates three academic medical centres, training more than 1,300 residents and fellows a year and running upwards of 800 active clinical trials. Specialist divisions include Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, Banner Alzheimer's Institute and Banner Children's, while Banner Health Insurance Plans serve over 1 million members across its service regions.

As a nonprofit, Banner Health retains its earnings within the communities it serves rather than distributing them to shareholders. In 2025 it reinvested $1.1 billion in community benefit, covering charity care, rural hospital support, Medicaid services, medical education and community health programmes. The system's annual economic impact is estimated at $12 billion.

Roles for clinicians, researchers, educators, insurance and managed-care professionals, and operational staff are spread across its hospital, outpatient, research and health-plan operations. Training the next generation of physicians is a stated organisational focus.
