The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) is a federally recognized sovereign Dakota tribal government based in Scott County, Minnesota, southwest of Minneapolis/St. Paul. It runs a range of local enterprises, among them two major casinos and an award-winning golf course, and is the largest employer in Scott County. Its website is shakopeedakota.org.
Alongside its commercial operations, the SMSC maintains cultural and environmental programmes. Hočokata Ū, a cultural centre that opened in 2019, serves as a home for community gatherings and a place to celebrate, explore and preserve Mdewakanton Dakota heritage, language and history. Native Green, its environmental sustainability initiative, covers waste diversion, compostable containers and prairie land restoration.
Philanthropy forms a substantial part of the organisation's activity. The SMSC has donated more than $400m to organisations and causes across the region, the state and the country, and has provided $500m in economic development loans to support other tribal nations. Through SMSC Gives, employees receive paid hours for volunteer work, reflecting the Dakota tradition of giving back.
