Oregon Health & Science University

Oregon's only public academic health center, combining patient care across a hospital and 200-clinic network, health professional education, and biomedical research in Portland.

Oregon Health & Science University is Oregon's only public academic health center, combining patient care, health professional education and research under a single mission of healing, teaching and discovery. Founded in 1887 as the University of Oregon Medical Department and established as OHSU in 1974, it employs more than 21,000 people, making it Portland's largest employer, and runs on an annual operating budget of $4.9 billion.

Care is delivered through OHSU Hospital, Doernbecher Children's Hospital and a network of more than 200 community clinics across Oregon and southwest Washington, which handle the state's most complex medical needs. Research is supported by a portfolio exceeding $580 million and by dedicated facilities including the Knight Cancer Research Building and the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute. Technical work spans precision cancer medicine, biomedical research, clinical innovation, and vaccine and gene therapy research.

Teaching is equally central: five schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health and Pharmacy - including a joint School of Public Health with Portland State University and a Pharmacy program with Oregon State University - train more than 5,700 students a year. Roles therefore span clinical practice, research, education and community service, reflecting a public institution committed to improving the health and well-being of all Oregonians.
