Layer Health

Layer Health, spun out of MIT in 2023, builds AI software that reviews longitudinal medical charts at scale, with the Layer Health Platform and the clinical abstraction product Distill.

Layer Health is a healthcare artificial intelligence company founded in 2023 and spun out of MIT. It builds what it describes as the AI layer for chart review: software that reads longitudinal medical records at scale and surfaces clinical insights that would otherwise require manual review of lengthy charts. The stated aim is to help healthcare organisations extract and understand clinical information from their records, and to unlock value and improve care by doing so.

Its principal product, the Layer Health Platform, unifies clinical data and transforms chart review activities, and is delivered through pre-packaged, tailored and custom-built modules. The company states the platform has been validated at scale. Distill, its first product, uses AI to perform clinical abstraction across specialties including surgery, cardiology and oncology, addressing the information problem in healthcare by doing quickly what would otherwise be slow, manual work.

The company's technical work spans large language models, machine learning, natural language processing applied to medical chart review, clinical data unification and abstraction, and UI/UX. The founding team's expertise covers machine learning, UI/UX, large language models and medicine, with backgrounds including MIT, Harvard Medical School and Google. Layer Health is based in the United States and is backed by GV (Google Ventures), Define Ventures, Flare Capital Partners and General Catalyst.
