Institute of Nuclear Power Operations
Nuclear industry self-regulatory body founded in 1979 that evaluates safety standards, analyses operating experience and delivers accredited training for utilities worldwide.
The Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) is the nuclear power industry's self-regulatory body, established in December 1979 by the industry in response to the Three Mile Island accident and the Kemeny Commission recommendations. From its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, it monitors and evaluates safety standards - including management, quality assurance, and operating procedures and practices - at nuclear facilities, with the aim of helping members operate nuclear reactors safely and reliably.
INPO's work spans nuclear safety, plant reliability, quality assurance, risk identification and mitigation, and the analysis of operating experience data, drawn from what is described as the industry's largest repository of such data and examined by data scientists to identify trends. Its services include peer reviews, confidential assessments, and hands-on assistance, which provide benchmarking insight and help members meet or exceed regulatory and insurance requirements. The National Academy for Nuclear Training (NANT) delivers accredited training and leadership development for plant staff and leaders.
The organisation works with more than 20 utilities and supports over 100 commercial nuclear reactors, with a presence in North America as well as China, Romania, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. More than 45 years after its founding, its stated focus remains on developing proficient, resilient and engaged teams and on operational excellence in a safety-critical industry. Confidentiality - in both assessments and operating experience sharing - is central to how it operates.
