About The Position
The Epidemiologist position is in the Public Health Division within the Health and Human Services (HHS) Department at the County of Marin. The Epidemiology Program is a busy and dynamic environment with a high value placed on collaboration, curiosity, initiative, and attention to quality. The position has frequent interaction with the Epidemiology Program team and staff from throughout HHS, and their work is used to inform and drive public health programming and policy. Under the general supervision of the Epidemiology Program Manager, the Epidemiologist is responsible for disease surveillance, program evaluation and performance management, and other epidemiologic activities as assigned supporting the Division and HHS.
The Epidemiologist works with internal and external partners to understand data needs; designs and implements data collection and manages data systems; collects, manages, analyzes, visualizes, interprets, and presents data; and translates data findings into data visualizations, presentations, reports, newsletters, and on-line data platforms. They may collaborate with others in the specification and building of data systems. They also provide technical assistance and training on data, analyses, and study design. They work closely with HHS program staff to assist in tracking, translating, and communicating program successes and they work with various data platforms to track and visualize community health.
There is currently one full-time (1.0 FTE) position available with the possibility of additional positions hired from this recruitment.
About You
Our Highly Qualified Candidate
The ideal candidate for this position has demonstrated strong data analysis and visualization skills (e.g. epidemiologic data analytic skills and experience cleaning and analyzing large datasets, experience with R statistical programming language, and experience visualizing data using Power BI and Arc GIS data visualization software) as well as the ability to effectively translate data to the public. The ideal candidate has at least six months of full-time epidemiology experience working in a County, State, or other territorial program. They possess strong attention to detail, excellent critical thinking skills, strong interpersonal communications skills, and the ability to adapt well and multi-task in a fast-paced dynamic environment. They can collaborate effectively with multiple team members from different disciplines. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable of a wide range of available data sources, and can analyze electronic medical records, population health data, social service program information, or other databases in addition to standard public health databases. The ideal candidate also has experience in designing or leading program evaluation efforts.

Knowledge of
- Principles and methods of bio-statistics and demography.
- Principles and procedures of epidemiology research including survey design, data management and statistical analysis.
- Theory, practice and application of epidemiological methodologies, including methods used in specialized fields.
- Etiology and treatment of communicable and chronic diseases.
- Statistical principles and many statistical approaches to a problem.
- Prospective studies, retrospective studies, cross-sectional studies and the strengths and limitations of each option.
- State and local laws, regulations and policies governing the investigation and reporting of communicable diseases.
- Public health issues and trends.
- Software applications utilized in epidemiology and biostatistics.
Ability to
- Plan and manage based on focused analysis multiple community-based projects.
- Implement various research studies and analyze data from a variety of statistical sources.
- Work independently as part of an achievement-orientated team, and provide direction to staff engaged in epidemiological investigations.
- Prepare statistics and analyze data through the use of computer generated epidemiological spreadsheets and statistical packages commonly available.
- Identify potential communicable or acute health risks, and track cases.
- Communicate effectively, including writing proposals, technical reports and making presentations.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of health professionals, County agencies and employees, community agencies and the public regarding sensitive health issues.
- Exercise sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines and policies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
By the time of appointment, possess a master or doctoral degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or public health with a specialization in epidemiology. Some experience in the field of epidemiology performing study design, implementation, or analysis is desirable.
