Primary Purpose of this Position: Have you ever wondered what it might be like to work at an Aquarium? The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as an
Exhibits Graphic Designer to perform creative and technical work in graphic design, signage, and digital layouts. The position works within the Exhibits team to strategize the exhibit's look and feel, and design exhibit graphics, signage, and promotional items for exhibits. All Exhibits staff members assist with repairs, cleaning, and general improvements throughout the Aquarium facility. The position performs all steps of the graphic production (file preparation, layout, printing, laminating, mounting, and installing graphics), maintains and troubleshoots graphics equipment including the large format printer and cutter, laminator, and assists with stocking graphics supplies. The Exhibits Graphic Designer is a team player reporting directly to the Exhibits Curator and will work closely with the exhibits team, aquarium staff, researchers, and outside contractors to ensure quality and safety of the exhibit, specimens, volunteers, and visitors. The position aims to improve proficiency in design programs such as Adobe Creative Suite and drafting software and is expected to stay up to date on current technologies and design trends. The designer attends meetings as requested and may be asked to serve on Aquarium committees.
Key Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To
- Plan and design exhibit graphics (interpretive graphics, infographics, reader rails, identification labels, banners, exhibit promotional graphics, digital presentations, AR/VR components, videos, etc.)
- Facilitate graphic production, assembly, maintenance, and repair of interior and exterior displays, signage, and graphic panels
- Participate in the overall process for exhibit or habitat design
Position/Physical Requirements
- Weekend, evening, and holiday work will be required.
- Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
- Must have the ability to perform large-format printing, graphic production, fabrication, and installation.
- Must have the ability to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand for extended periods, walk, push/pull, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and use repetitive motions.
- Must have the ability to perform work in outdoor conditions.
- Must have the ability to work around flashing lights or screens.
- Must have the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move or lift objects.
- Must have the ability able to climb and work at heights and on ladders or lifts as part of mounting and installing graphic components.

- Demonstrated experience with Adobe Creative Suites Software (InDesign: able to set up character and paragraph styles, link photos, and text wraps; Illustrator: able to use clipping paths, draw custom shapes with pen tool, and use character styles; Photoshop: able to edit, crop, and use filters to enhance photos).
Management Preference
- Video production experience; animation experience, Augmented and Virtual Reality
- Experience with 3D printing and laser cutting/engraving
- CAD and/or Drafting skills

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located 6 miles from Morehead City, NC, on Bogue Banks, sits adjacent to Bogue Sound. A living collection of over 4,500 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is located in the middle of Roosevelt Natural Area, a state park of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems.
