Position Overview
Applied AI Engineers build and deepen the technical relationship between Stainless and our most important users. The role is technically engineering, but functionally, it’s much more dynamic. You’ll be working closely with some of the top AI labs in the world (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc) helping them architect, launch, and scale their APIs with Stainless. It’s part engineering, part product, part deployment with lots of ambiguous, high-impact problems to solve alongside the folks shaping the future of AI.
To thrive in this role, you’ll need strong judgment, broad technical fluency in multiple programming languages, and the ability to navigate unfamiliar codebases with confidence. You’ll move fast, learn even faster, and directly shape the experience of some of the most influential developers on the planet.
Responsibilities
Overall you’ll:
- Work directly with critical customers like OpenAI, Anthropic and Cloudflare to:
- Evolve their SDKs through the release of new features (Run Tools, Structured Output, Streaming Helpers)
- Directly contribute to their SDKs by writing custom helpers, utilities and extensions for advanced use cases like Server Sent Events, websockets and more to come. You’ll work closely with companies like OpenAI and Anthropic as a critical partner in the lead-up to all their major API launches.
- Do all of this across all languages that Stainless supports, learning new languages where needed.
- Build AI-powered tooling to:
- configure new users’ SDKs when signing up for Stainless
- translate custom tailored solutions from one language to many
- write rich, purpose-built examples and demos for prospective customers
- Write great docs, help build a great website, do what needs done
- Write code both internally and for external customers. Some examples:
- improving our SDK Codegen to handle new use-cases
- writing examples and demos for new feature releases

Profile
You might be a good fit for this role if:
- You were a founder or founding engineer of an AI-driven company and worked really closely with your customers to help understand their needs and solve them
- You have broad polyglot interest/experience – comfort working across multiple programming languages, and enthusiasm to build proficiency with even more
- You have experience using AI to generate high-quality code.
- You have a true passion for developer experience and empathy for developers from all backgrounds (junior, non-traditional, expert power-user etc)
- You love connecting with all users: learning their needs and coming up with creative solutions to solve them
- You care deeply about great communication about technical subjects, from terseness of a tweet to an expanded tutorial in documentation
- You’re a quick learner, self-motivated, and able to execute quickly whilst maintaining high quality
- You love crafting a great product. You appreciate and show extreme detail-orientation in articulating papercuts and finding every possible corner of polish
- Experience building and consuming APIs
- Built and/or maintained a popular open-source project

Compensation Range: $150K - $260K
